Kevin Spafford

Legacy by Design, LLC

Building on a 20 year career in the insurance business, 10 years as a small business entrepreneur, and now as a wealth manager, Kevin brings an incredible depth and breadth of financial planning services and family business experiences to the Center for Land-Based Learning.

Just prior to the publication of his book, Legacy by Design: Succession Planning for Agribusiness Owners (Marketplace Books®) in 2005, Kevin founded Legacy by Design, a succession planning practice dedicated exclusively to serving the succession planning needs of farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness owners.

As the architect of the award-winning Farm Journal Legacy Project (a multimedia public relations campaign to promote succession planning in the ag community), Kevin affected consumer behavior and improved the way farm, ranch, and agribusiness families engage in the succession planning process.

Through the Project, Kevin has:

  • Been published more than 300 times in the Agriculture’s leading magazines.
  • Facilitated more than 100 live presentations across the U.S.
  • Written multiple workbooks and created numerous planning tools.
  • Produced weekly eNewsletters which were sent to subscribers across the U.S.
  • Hosted 5 seasons of ‘Leave a Legacy’ TV.

Today, as a Wealth Manager with Ryan Wealth Management in Yuba City, Kevin leads the firm’s advanced planning efforts and he’s busy growing a clientele of farming professionals. With Glenn County Fair, Kevin is co-hosting North State Innovations in Agriculture, a 2-day conference dedicated to helping farm families prepare for the future and maximize opportunities in a changing economy.

Among a series of professional designations and licenses, Kevin is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and he’s earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Management – Business, from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA.

On a personal note, Kevin is a Past President and Board Member for the Exchange Club of Durham and he’s served on his local church board, St. James in Durham. He enjoys flying, fishing, hunting, and camping. He and his wife, Anne-Marie, have been married for 36 years. They are proud parents of their son Drew and his wife Dana, and their daughter Sara and her new husband Michael. They have a grand-horse and a couple of grand-puppies. They live in Durham.
