Summary of the Day: On Tuesday, March 23rd, 2021, the Kern County FARMS Advanced and Leadership Program from McFarland High School had a Regional Zoom field day with Redhouse Beef. Redhouse Beef is located in Bakersfield, CA and they operate a grass-fed beef operation. Their main goal is to serve high quality meat straight from the pasture to your table. Our video tour included walking around the ranch seeing the facilities where the cattle are raised on and how they are fed properly. We ran through the process of tagging, weighing and treating the cattle as they come through the chute and how to correctly do so. Redhouse also has grass fed chickens where they sell their eggs and they also have separate chickens that are meat hens and will be sold as grass fed. They like to keep stress free environment for the herd and the flock to help them maintain the best. If you have not tried any products from Redhouse you must! We are so thankful for their time and hope to go back in person next year!

Summary of the Day: On Thursday, November 12th, 2020, the Kern County FARMS Advanced Program from McFarland High School had a Zoom field day with AC Foods. The day before the field day, students were hand delivered kits from AC Foods that consisted of a variety of their green and red holiday grapes. Students were also given a refractometer which they used during the live meeting with the Chief Agronomist.

As the students joined the meetings, they were being introduced to our hosts Bryce Chudy and Priscila Reuland. We talked about Columbine Vineyard, AC Foods sister company. We discussed the Refractometer which is the tool used to measure the sugar content in the grapes.

The higher the number the higher the sugar content in the grape. Each variety has its own measurement, such as a red grape will have a higher sugar content than your green grapes. The measuring of sugar content in all fruit is very important. It helps determine the correct time to harvest the fruit for consumption. It was a great informational field day!!

Theme: Water for Farming

Upon arrival, students ate breakfast and participated in an introduction and Thank You Presentation. Following meeting our host partners, the students watched a video on Meyers Water Bank presentation as well as a Video Display & Discussion led by Jason. We were then joined by a falconer and her 2 birds. She displayed the birds and explained how they are used in rodent control on farms and wildlife preserves. We were then taken to the actual site and enjoyed lunch and a nature walk. Finally, students participated in a hands-on student service project for Meyers Water Bank and then we closed the day with presenting Thank You’s to our hosts.
