The Cannery in Davis

Incubator Farmers

Alex Morton of Leaf and Lark Farm, spent 18 years working in conservation biology before embarking on a new career in horticulture. She volunteered with the California Native Plant Society nursery for 4 years and acquired a wealth of knowledge about propagating the native plants she had previously studied in the field. Alex then worked with Soil Born Farms as their greenhouse coordinator for two years--growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers. She is also serving as garden coordinator for Alice Birney Elementary School where she enjoys working with 3rd and 5th grade children.

Alex is currently launching her nursery business where she is offering a well curated selection of native plants, herbs, flowers, and vegetable starts for sale as well as plant related workshops. She will begin offering plants for sale at the Cannery in April. Come by and visit her in the greenhouse Mondays and Thursdays.

Cannery Farm

Rachel Morrison has been hosting apiary tours at The Cannery since 2016 through The Beecharmers and Airbnb experiences. Rachel also hosts small groups such as students from local schools, girl scouts or groups from retirement homes. They usually have about 15 guests during each apiary tour. The guests start by learning more about The Cannery Farm and Center for Land-Based Learning along with the mission of The Beecharmers and a tour of the farm with highlights of different pollinators along the way, often spotting up to 10 different pollinators such as lady bugs, bumble bees, hover flies, carpenter bees and leafcutter bees.

Everyone gets to open up the hive and hold the frames of bees and check out all of the jobs being done by the worker bees. They find drones and sometimes even spot the queens. Bees come in with their pockets full of the pollen we just watched them collect and we see them deposit the food in the hexagon cells inside the hive.

The Beecharmers also partner with Fiery Ginger Farm to lead weekly field trips with K - 6th grade students from Robla School District. Participants visit the CLBL Fiery Ginger Farm in West Sac and rotate between hands-on learning all about the crops and planting with the farmers, checking out the pigs and other animals and then learning about how beekeepers and farmers partner together to provide us with the foods that we eat every day. The students play an interactive game that helps them act out all of the jobs of the hive and remember that every individual in a community is important and that caring for every member of society is what makes the entire hive (and our communities) work successfully. They have an enclosed observation hive for them to check out the bees safely and as close-up as they want.
