About the Center for Land-Based Learning

The Mission of the Center for Land-Based Learning is to inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders and natural resource stewards. We achieve this mission by providing experiential education programs for high school students (the SLEWS, Caring for our Watersheds, and FARMS Leadership Programs) and a beginning farmer training and development program for adults (the California Farm Academy). These model programs provide hands-on experiences through which participants develop leadership skills and create connections to environmental, agricultural, and food system careers. Our programs span more than 30 California counties and reach over 2,000 people each year.

Director of Operations

Position Overview

The Center for Land-Based Learning cultivates opportunity for youth, for agriculture, for business, for the environment. A statewide nonprofit based in Woodland, CA, CLBL develops adaptive people and ecosystems by inspiring and training leaders to dig into themselves and the land in new ways. Now, we are seeding a vision for the future of agricultural and ecological stewardship in the Golden State and, with the right leadership team, we can bring that vision to fruition.

The Center for Land-Based Learning is in need of a full-time, on-site Director of Operations with the leadership, strategic mind, and operational know-how to take us to the next level. The ideal candidate has experience working with startups, with mergers and acquisitions, or with other challenging growth milestones. For many years, CLBL has operated as a small nonprofit, but with a ballooning budget, staff size and strategic vision, a more sophisticated approach is needed to successfully navigate expansion.

Job Details

This is a full-time, exempt position with direct reports and a pay range of $100,000-$120,000. This position includes medical, vision, and dental benefits, paid time off, flexible health spending accounts, supplemental insurance, and 401(K)/Roth IRA options.

Core Responsibilities

The director of operations will manage CLBL's two office facilities: Our 30-acre teaching farm and statewide headquarters building in Woodland, and our satellite studio office in West Sacramento. Examples of duties include managing internet contracts, maintenance schedules, and repair services.

The role is also responsible for overseeing the organization's human resource needs. Currently, CLBL has one on-site human resource manager and contracts additional services with a third-party provider. Over time, the Director of Operations will fully build out this department so all HR services, including hiring, onboarding, training and offboarding, can be provided in house.

The operations director serves as the de facto finance director and oversees the organization's full range of business functions and systems, including monitoring the annual budget process, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and compliance with all requirements of regulatory and funding agencies. The role is supported by a third-party accounting consultant, contracts manager, administrative assistant, and the finance committee of CLBL's board of directors. Robust financial expertise is paramount.

Qualifications

To thrive in this role, candidates need a minimum of 7 years experience in senior management and an innovative, adaptive approach to organizational change. Many of CLBL's internal processes and policies need to be reconsidered or created from scratch, so long-range systems thinking is critical. Strong project and process management will be key. Experience working with nonprofit boards is a plus.

Finally, the Director of Operations will manage the organization in the absence of the CEO. Wise, winsome and measured decision making is expected.
